Biography
Mr. Donahue’s career traces a remarkable arc — rooted in the high-tech world of the early Internet, where he began as a systems administrator and consultant serving clients ranging from ambitious startups to Fortune 50 giants, including GE Capital, Bank One, IBM, and Amadeus. That foundation forged a practitioner unlike any other: a technologist who thinks like a lawyer, and a lawyer who thinks like an engineer.
Admitted to the bar in 1996, Mr. Donahue channeled his technical expertise into corporate counsel and founding roles at a series of successful technology companies and startups — among them Baker Robbins & Company, Leapnet, FatCow, and SpaBoom — earning firsthand fluency in the legal and business challenges that define high-growth enterprises.
An Electrical Engineer by training, he brings more than four decades of information technology expertise to his practice — personally architecting the firm’s most advanced expert systems and occupying a leading role in the application of artificial intelligence to the practice of law. This rare convergence of deep legal acumen and elite technical fluency positions him in a class few attorneys can claim.
In 2011, Mr. Donahue founded Law 4 Small Business (L4SB) with a bold mandate: to deliver sophisticated, licensed legal services through the Internet — directly challenging the proliferation of unlicensed legal providers operating in the digital marketplace. The venture proved transformative. In July 2017, L4SB merged with Business Law Southwest, creating a regional powerhouse for business legal services across the Southwest.
Today, under Mr. Donahue’s leadership alongside his partner Donald Kochersberger, the firm has achieved a decade of extraordinary growth — establishing itself as one of the premier business law firms in the Southwest and earning national recognition as a leader in attorney-driven online legal services.
His practice commands the intersection of high-stakes business law and cutting-edge technology, with counsel sought for the most demanding transactional matters — encompassing sophisticated contract structures, high-value negotiations, complex business transactions, intellectual property strategy, and Internet law. He advises organizations navigating intricate transactional landscapes, including strategic partnerships, licensing arrangements, mergers and acquisitions, and multi-layered corporate structures involving intellectual property portfolios, revenue-sharing frameworks, and proprietary technology integration.
Within New Mexico, Mr. Donahue serves as a trusted legal authority for engineers, scientists, and technology-driven enterprises — guiding them through the crafting of sophisticated commercial relationships and standing as a formidable advocate when it matters most, prosecuting licensing disputes, trade secret misappropriation claims, and intellectual property infringement actions with precision and resolve.
His clientele spans the full spectrum of American enterprise — from high-growth startups to Fortune 50 corporations — serving thousands of businesses across the United States who demand exceptional legal and strategic counsel.
